Port of Port Angeles signs a lease with Peninsula Plywood Group, LLC
September 28, 2009
The Port of Port Angeles Commission President, John Calhoun, announced today during their regular commission meeting that the Port and Peninsula Plywood Group, LLC have successfully signed a lease for the 19 acres of property and mill site formerly leased to K-Ply. Spearheaded by Mr. Josh Renshaw, Pen Ply now has full access to the property and will begin bringing the mill back to productive state. The property has sat vacant since K-Ply closed nearly two years ago.
Per their lease with the Port, Pen Ply is tasked with employing 60 full time employees during their first 90 days. The mill will eventually employ approximately 172 workers. Pen Ply is currently recruiting for supervisory jobs and running employment ads in the local newspaper. “We are excited to have Peninsula Plywood as a tenant and look forward to the jobs returning to our waterfront and our community,” Port Executive Director, Jeff Robb stated.
Although under different owners, Peninsula Plywood mill began producing plywood on the Port Angeles waterfront in 1941. In 1971, the worker owned mill sold to ITT Rayonier and then in 1989, ITT sold to Klukwan, Inc., an Alaskan Native corporation. While Peninsula Plywood Group is a new tenant for the Port of Port Angeles, the mill site has been producing family wage jobs in Clallam County for almost 70 years.
