May 30, 2008
PORT AND CITY FORM PORT ANGELES HARBOR-WORKS DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
Community Partnership to Cleanup and Re-Develop Rayonier Mill Site
The Port of Port Angeles Commissioners have today announced a new partnership with the City of Port Angeles to create the Port Angeles Harbor-Works Development Authority. In working closely with the Washington State Department of Ecology and Rayonier, the Port and the City have identified similar goals to re-energize the clean up and the redevelopment of the former Rayonier mill site and the Port Angeles Harbor.
The Port and the City have the statutory authority that can benefit the clean up and the redevelopment of the Rayonier site as well as the harbor. The Port and the City have entered into an interlocal agreement as equal partners to bring their collective resources and powers together to tackle this massive project. The tasks the Port Angeles Harbor-Works Development Authority will assume include:
- The completion of a comprehensive environmental clean up plan.
- The development and use of new clean up technologies that provide educational opportunities for students and educators while also creating jobs for the area.
- The creation of a site redevelopment plan to transform the former mill site into a productive community asset.
- Restoration and protection of Ennis Creek
- Actively seek citizen and public involvement throughout each phase of the project.
The formation of the Port Angeles Harbor-Works Development Authority will demonstrate that challenging, large scale and environmentally sensitive projects can be accomplished with cooperation amongst agencies while creating an outstanding asset for our community and our citizens. Port of Port Angeles Commission President, John Calhoun states that, “Not only does the creation of the public development authority accomplish goals set forth in the Port’s strategic plan, it restores one of the jewels of the Port Angeles waterfront.”
The Port Angeles City Council and the Port of Port Angeles Commissioners met in a joint session on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 to set these plans in motion.
